Leonard J. Jarzembowski, an immigrant from Poland, came to Detroit and began working in the undertaking profession in 1918. During the 1920s and 30s, he ran Caniff Undertaking Company in Hamtramck. Most funeral homes are in old homes or mansions. In 1922, Leonard built a funeral home from the ground up on Wesson Avenue across from St. Francis d'Assisi. This building may be the first funeral home built in Detroit.

As an authentic Detroit funeral home, the Wesson location was selected to be used in the Disney movie Tiger Town. This location has since been donated to the Catholic church and is now part of the St. Francis d'Assisi parish complex. Leonard passed the business to his son Raymond L. Jarzembowski in 1956. A second location was opened on Warren Avenue in 1963. Today the Warren funeral home is owned and operated by Thomas F. Jarzembowski.
